The city places its founding somewhere between the years 1831-1837. When the Indian Removal Act became law, the Wheaton brothers who arrived from Connecticut purchased large tracts of land. Not long after, many New England settlers also followed suit and joined them in the fledgling community.  In 1848, they provided right of way to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. In 1850, ten blocks were platted and anyone who wanted to build was immediately given free land. It was only in 1853 that a formal platting of the community was done. Incorporation to a village was achieved on Feb. 24, 1869 and as a city by April 24, 1890.

Restaurants & Nightlife

Pa Lian Burmese Restaurant – Probably the best place to eat in the city. Do try the tofu Gyaw, Kyarzan Thoke, Mango tofu and the tea leaf salad. Each entrée comes with a hot cup of vegan soup.  The Shun Noodles with beef is one of the bestsellers. Service is excellent and the food served is always of the highest quality.

Ivy Restaurant – The place offers diners a quiet vibe and a sense of serenity. The restaurant is located in an old church and the stained glass and most of the décor does homage to that.  The food is absolutely amazing.  The fried calamari is perfect lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The main entrees you can try are the chicken, steak and scallop dishes.  Everything was delightful.  There is also a dessert sampler that you can check out that is definitely for sharing.

Gia Mia Pizza Bar – Gia Mia is a place that never disappoints. Food is excellent and the service is impeccable. They offer pizzas made in an authentic brick pizza oven for that true taste and flavor experience.  It is a small restaurant and is always packed so be sure to come early. They offer a short rib gnocchi that is cooked to perfection.
