Life in Wheaton IL
Wheaton IL is a small town with a big heart. It is a tight-knit and family-friendly community that has so much to offer. Wheaton French Market
Wheaton has a nice French Market that is identical to a Farmer’s Market and commences from mid-April up through November every Saturday from 8am-2pm. The market is held on Liberty and Main Streets just south of the tracks. Things to enjoy in the market include: locally grown produce, handmade jewelry and fresh flowers as well as deliciously baked goods and even handcrafted skin care products. You can also buy apparel, purses, scarves, cheeses, meats and there are food trucks too.
Shopping Scene
There is also a lot of shopping to be had at the Town Square Shopping Center. This is a nice outdoor mall with several notable shops for everything you need. Some of the outlets you can shop in are Banana Republic, Gap, Victoria’s Secret and more. Downtown Wheaton is where you can find quaint boutique like stores and home décor shops.
Fun Parks
The Wheaton Park District oversees 52 different parks across 800 acres of land and includes: Arrowhead Golf Course, Blackwell Forest Reserve, Cosley Zoo and the Danada Horse Farm. There is no other village that offers public horse stables, a zoo and a nice golf course.
History
The city places its founding somewhere between the years 1831-1837. When the Indian Removal Act became law, the Wheaton brothers who arrived from Connecticut purchased large tracts of land. Not long after, many New England settlers also followed suit and joined them in the fledgling community. In 1848, they provided right of way to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. In 1850, ten blocks were platted and anyone who wanted to build was immediately given free land. It was only in 1853 that a formal platting of the community was done. Incorporation to a village was achieved on Feb. 24, 1869 and as a city by April 24, 1890.

Pa Lian Burmese Restaurant – Probably the best place to eat in the city. Do try the tofu Gyaw, Kyarzan Thoke, Mango tofu and the tea leaf salad. Each entrée comes with a hot cup of vegan soup. The Shun Noodles with beef is one of the bestsellers. Service is excellent and the food served is always of the highest quality.
Ivy Restaurant – The place offers diners a quiet vibe and a sense of serenity. The restaurant is located in an old church and the stained glass and most of the décor does homage to that. The food is absolutely amazing. The fried calamari is perfect lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The main entrees you can try are the chicken, steak and scallop dishes. Everything was delightful. There is also a dessert sampler that you can check out that is definitely for sharing.
Gia Mia Pizza Bar – Gia Mia is a place that never disappoints. Food is excellent and the service is impeccable. They offer pizzas made in an authentic brick pizza oven for that true taste and flavor experience. It is a small restaurant and is always packed so be sure to come early. They offer a short rib gnocchi that is cooked to perfection.

Wheaton Park District – A 4-time national gold medal awardee for excellence from the National Recreation and Park Association, the park district covers 52 parks spanning over 800 acres.
Lincoln Marsh Natural Area — this is a 135 acre natural zone with over 300 species of prairie and wetland plants and animals.
Cosley Zoo – A nationally acclaimed zoo that was built in 1974 and houses over 200 animals that represent 70 species.
Chicago Golf Club – this is a prestigious private golf club located on the south side of the city. It features the oldest 18-hole golf course in the country. It regularly hosts the US Open, US Amateur Golf Championship and has also hosted the Walker Cup in 2005.
